I have been feeling rather lacking in the emotion department as of late. I have come to realize that to feel alive, I need some fear or real chance of failure; that is my need to motivate myself properly.
On an unrelated topic, I saw something that showed the Mtv logo, and I realized that, with the increasing monopolization of media sources by fewer owners, the risk-taking behavior taken by early cable TV channels and companies is a little-known phenomena at this time.
I remember when there were experimental shows such as Liquid TV or fucking that inane nighttime drama no one watched (but was different none the less–something like Undressed or Unprotected) on the MTV, but it is just more and more less relevant programming. This isn’t an age thing… I like anything, but it has to be interesting and worthwhile (even in a worthless manner).
No more are there shows aired in the middle of the night for no real audience, but important and innovative in their own right… They (the big 6) would rather make the cash from infomercials and play it safe. No production costs, but no pushing the envelope or trying new things; it is a medium that is becoming rusty… the web now fills this gap, but networks need to be sharp as well.
I want absurdity, innovation and risk, even if it won’t skirt my particular persuasions. There is so little that is cutting-edge and freakish on conglomerate-owned TV that they (the $$$-focused entities) may be missing-out on something far more lucrative and creative. The next big thing might just take away from their market share…
A good analogy for my fear of network neutrality is the limited possibilities and content filtering available from cable television networks… An excellent analogue indeed.
